For all you "Big Ray" fans that didn't think he got the playing time he deserved or for you Oregon fans looking for an update on how the Oregon seniors are doing as they try to land a pro job playing basketball I got a small update on Ray Schafer for you.
Ray has signed an 11 month deal with the Shiga Lakestars, an expansion team in Japan's Basketball Japan League, coached by Oregon-native Robert Pierce.
Ray did a Q&A with the Daily Emerald which is the student run newspaper at the University of Oregon and I found a few interesting tid bits from the interview.
ODE: Is the salary enough to live on then, or is the team providing most what you need?
Ray: The contract takes care of two bicycles - usually you get cars, but down there you wouldn't want a car - so two bicycles, the apartment's furnished and transportation, everything's taken care of, so the only thing we'll have as an expense pretty much is food.
That's not exactly the thing you'd be thinking about when you're trying to sign a contract for a pro sport. But hey, sounds like Ray and his wife got what they wanted and sound excited to go over to Japan.

Babe Ruth bought a bicycle with the bonus he got when he signed his first pro baseball contract.
